Day 5 (see previously 4.304 Mixed Grill).

Sick, sick, sick.  Mid-afternoon, I was slammed by a sudden wave of nausea and lightheadedness.  Then fever and muscle aches.  Somehow, I managed to survive to the end of the day, though I didn't contribute much to the discussion.  When I got back to the hotel, I took some cold meds and crashed.  I awoke at some point shuddering from the chills; because I hadn't packed anything warm, I wrapped myself in the hotel bathrobe and went back to bed.  I awoke several times throughout the night, every few hours, wracked with the runs.  When I got up 14 hours later, the fever had subsided, but a lingering pain in my abdomen remained.

The highly fortified EMRO building, where I've been working for the past few days.

"Bad dates" (if you don't get the reference, never mind)--actually, no, the dates were just fine, served as a snack during one of the coffee breaks.

A quick investigation revealed that it had indeed been food poisoning.  Of the 6 dinner party guests the night before, 3 who'd not eaten the lamb kofta at all turned out fine, 1 who'd had a taste had had a slight stomachache, 1 who'd eaten a full portion had been woozy all day, and 1 (me) who'd eaten a full portion and another partial portion for breakfast the next day had been hit the worst.

Before sleeping, I ate a cup ramyeon that I'd purchased at the airport for an emergency--this certainly seemed to qualify--hoping that it would soothe the sharp pain in my gut.  It didn't, probably made matters worse.

The fact that I ate ramyeon for dinner, as opposed to some local dish, should suggest how sick I really was.

All night, through the delirium, I kept dreaming about ordering room service.

  1. a real bummer that u got food poising :(
but this post made me realize the most probable reason why I felt so damn sick my last full day in NK... The god damn MNM! As you might remember from my picture, it contained what I think was chicken... it must've been the damn chicken!

Before I thought it was either the fact I was sweating like a pig and not drinking enough water that day... or due to the fact that I had a little bit of dog soup at the lunch that day... but now I realize it must've been the stuff I ate the night before... which was MNM

Wouldn't it be ironic if the first case of food poising I got in Asia was from Naengmyon?

  2. i can't recall the specific %, but the vast majority of all sudden illnesses are caused by food poisoning.

maybe they knew that you were a spy and poisoned the MNM for poetic justice.

  4. Btw our guides said something along the lines that we had to drink alcohol together with the dog soup, otherwise we would get sick. Have you ever heard any such myths connected to eating dog meat?

  5. so many myths about dog meat--my favorite being the one about beating the dog to death to get adrenalin into the meat, which tenderizes it and provides "stamina" to the person eating it--but never heard the one about alcohol.
