TERRP (Try Every Restaurant in Robinsons Place), Phase 3.  In Manila since January, here through October under the current contract, living above Robinsons Place, I've been eating my way through the mall.  As far as I know, nobody has ever done anything like this, my unique contribution to the city's food/blog scene.  I did all the restaurants on the 1st floor (currently 36, down from the initial 40) and the 2nd floor (currently 7, down from the initial 14).  Now, I'm on to the restaurants on the 3rd floor (currently 28, 2 of which were already covered during Phase 1).  Then, once Phase 3 is complete, time permitting, the 4th floor.  Henceforth, however, I'll take them as they come, no more pushing the agenda; if I don't finish, no big deal.

This is the 61st in the series, the 18th on the 3rd floor.  Padre Faure Wing.

All restaurants on the 1st floor:

- 39(1.36) Apr 2 / Cabalen (Filipino) (see 5.087 Buffet Scraps) / 1.5 / $$

Handaan is a Filipino food court stall.  Nothing special, just various classic stir-fries and grilled meats.

Tragically ironic, "busog" means "filling"--this was as far as I could go.

The food was atrocious.

I am so fucking sick of the goddamn food court.  This reminds me of that stretch towards the end Phase 1 when I suffered through all those nasty American-style fast food chains.  Eating my own cultural shit was bad enough, but eating the shit of someone else's foreign culture is intolerable.  And I still have 4 more stalls to go.

  1. Why are you doing this to yourself? Ditch the food court and get out in the real world and eat something amazing! No one will judge you for not finishing this (revolting) experiment :)

  2. I would judge myself.

I get enough food experiences traveling these days, so staying grounded at the mall every once in awhile is okay. Also easy to write about. Kinda like those throw-away days back in Korea, quiet meals of leftovers at home.

Only have about 20 more to go. Good thing this place is a relatively small mall for Manila.

    Anyway, I appreciate your encouragement!

  3. it wasn't meant as encouragement. More like discouragement.
20 more blechy meals to read about? sounds miserable. I do like your recent exotic food travelogues. More of that!

  5. I meant your general encouragement by reading the blog.

Now that you mention it, I just realized that I'm probably boring/nauseating whatever readers I have out there with TERRP.

Then again, since I've been in Manila, the daily hits on the blog have gone up from about 100 per day to nearly 600. I think it might be because I've written about so many restaurants, so maybe the blog comes up more often in searches.

In any case, no, I can't give up now. 75% there! I'll be the only person in the world, probably, who's eaten through Robinsons Place, at least maybe the only blogger who's written about it. What an accomplishment that'll be!!

And my trip to Spain is coming up, so stay tuned for more exotic food travelogues.
